There is a paradox or contradiction of the role of members of subordinated and oppressed groups in their own subordination and oppression. This seems important in answering the question of why false consciousness persists, and has profound interest for revolutionaries and liberationists. Butler seems to be dealing with this issue.

Her analysis of subjection seems to be an analysis of subjagation. However, because the semanitic root "subject" is a self contradictory double meaning in English, the discussion needs some clarification for those new to her terminology. What she calls "subjection" seems to be what I would call "objectification" or "reification" . Is she talking about something other than that ? Reification I would call accepting our powerlessness over our own lives as normal , after an article by Tom Meisendorf. (Will cite better later).

My acquaintance with Judith Butler is almost completely through e-mail. I recall especially debates about her accusations against some as left conservatives. I understand her to be a Lesbian/Gay liberationist and I assume feminist; and to some extent a follower of Michel Foucault.

However, otherwise I am substantially ignorant of her ideas and practice. Perhaps in the course of the discussion some listers can give some answers to the following background questions:

What is her theory of Lesbian and Gay lib. ? What is her theory of feminism ? How is it different from other such theories ?

Is she for socialism ? Does she consider herself a revolutionary ?

What is her sameness and difference with Marxism ?

Is she an anti-racist ? or Black or other national liberationist ? What is her theory of racial or national liberation,if any ?
