I agree that 'more capitalism, more urbanization' is not very relevant for whether homophobia strengthens or weakens in core capitalist countries. It might make much difference in the periphery, however, capitalism being a process of uneven and combined development, socially + ideologically.

What of the question of technology, more specifically reproductive technology? It seems that it has much social and ideological implications for gender/sexuality questions.
