The whole idea that giving people more money to spend is good for
capitalism is older than Henry Ford, or whoever, but the BC's don't seem to
care usually.

Henry was an interesting contradiction if you look at him through current neoclassical eyes -- he was patriarchal and progressive at the same time. He understood that paying a living wage was good for the economy, the workers could buy their own products (something completely ignored by NAFTA proponents) BUT he placed strong moral limits on WHO should get the living wage. Those who got the "high" wages were married men who did not drink or cheat on their wives. Women, single men, or men who drank, didn't go to church, etc. were exempt. He even created a department of moral police who would check on the lives of those receiving top wages to make sure they were worthy. maggie coleman mscoleman at aol.com
