I can see both points as valid. We live our lives sometimes in a vacuum where we do not know what the consequences of using products will be. Some of this is a malicious vacuum created by profiteers like the tobacco corps who don't want us to know. Sometimes corps have a hint that they are putting harmful things out there and they try to get away with it. Since medicine has been so tied to the market place as well, it often lags behind in gathering enough evidence (getting the funding, wanting to go up against R.J. Reynolds, etc.) to put the elements of contamination together. Still in the end, it seems many people will continue to smoke, drink aspartame, etc. no matter what they know.
