TUESDAY JULY 27 AT 7:00 pm - BERKELEY CITY COUNCIL MEETING ON KPFA CRISIS ----------------------------------------------------------------- On Tuesday, July 27th, the Berkeley City Council will hold a special session devoted entirely to the lockout and takeover at KPFA. At its last meeting, the Council debated two pro- KPFA resolutions, but failed to pass either of them. Since then, Mayor Shirley Dean held a meeting with the KPFA Steering Committee to draft a resolution which could get unanimous support from the Council. The Steering Committee believes Dean's resolution is strong enough for the present, and would like to see it pass unanimously. Other council members are expected to make further demands, such as calling for the resignations of Mary Frances Berry and Lynn Chadwick. While these calls are justified and welcome, the Steering Committee hopes they won't stand in the way of a strong, undivided statement of support for KPFA. Pressure from KPFA's supporters made this meeting happen - now we need a strong turnout to let the Council know it has made the right decision to see this as an urgent issue for the entire community.

The Berkeley City Council meets: Tuesday July 27, at 7:00 p.m. in the Old City Hall Building, 2134 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.

We should all try to be there. You can call or write your city council members to encourage them to attend:

ANTI-PACIFICA PROTEST IN WASHINGTON D.C. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The movement to save KPFA is coming to Mary Frances Berry's doorstep! At 10 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, protesters will gather outside the offices of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, which Berry heads, to protest the unresponsive and irresponsible actions of Pacifica management. The D.C. press is already picking up on the KPFA/Pacifica conflict - Monday's Washington Post ran a piece on the controversy and TV Channel Four is following the story. Next stop: Philadelphia!
