The Nifty Fifty were the handful of "growth" or "glamour" stocks that dominated the U.S. stock market in the early 1970s - Xerox, drug companies, etc - while the rest of the market was fairly lifeless. They're often invoked as a precedent for today's net stock mania (which is looking more like yesterday's or April's mania).
