UT lobbyist Walter Lambert got the Senate to change a bill restricting the practice into a mere mandate for "credit counselling" by telling legislators falsely that money from UT's arrangements was going to scholarships. He mostly got away with this because he also works for both the daily paper and the TV station with the biggest audience, but the House did move forward with the original bill.
Ultimately UT was able to scuttle the bill in a deal in which they gave up their attempt to increase the legal secrecy around corporate-backed research on campus. A classic instance of Tennessee politics.
