One of the minor but real pleasures of maillists is once in a while coming across a perfect expression of something. Death row does seem to be one of the u.s. equivalents to gladiatorial combat & other entertainments of empire. The long wait between first sentencing and execution must add immeasurably to the entertainment value, especially for those who write indignant letters to the paper saying killings should go faster.
