spend 1/2 an hour doing a web search of north american and australian domestic violence/domestic battering sites on the internet.
[you can do a comparative search of UK sites if you're really into social science methods]
you will find that every site in the business of fighting domestic violence has a section devoted to "lesbian battering" there is generally a FAQ or Myth vs. Fact section explaining that research indicates that lesbian battering occurs at almost the same *rate* as battering in het relationships. [whether this is true or not is NOT the point right here. rather, the point is that this refutes jim's [and roiphe's} claims that ALL feminist activists see men as naturally and the sole perpetrators of violence against women.] furthermore, many of them are increasingly prone to recognize that women batter male partners.
you will find too greg that most who educate about domestic violence argue that d.v. is a behavioral choice. that is, taking care of the addiction won't necess take care of the abuse. it's all about getting the abuser to take responsibility for their actions. i'm no expert, but spoke to a friend yesterday who is and this is what she told me is the dominant perspective in social work schools, classes, conferences. i think a web search will confirm this too.
also, greg, i pointed out who i knew was an addict/alcoholic. is that not enough for you? and personally, who cares if they're drunk, high. is it less wrong to beat someone else up?
