NO DEBT, NO SWEAT: ORGANIZING FOR GLOBAL JUSTICE September 23 - 26, 1999 (Thursday - Sunday) Washington, DC

The 50 Years Is Enough Network Fourth Activists conference will be held the weekend prior to the gathering of the world's Finance Ministers in Washington for the annual meetings of the World Bank and IMF.

We are planning a conference for both seasoned and beginning activists in the struggle for economic justice. The Opening Plenary will lay out the issues - in particular, debt, sweatshops and the international financial institutions. After establishing a critique of the global economy, we will spend the next two days highlighting real-world alternatives in our communities and around the world.

Colleagues and partners of the 50 Years Is Enough Network in the U.S. and around the world, especially the Global South, will join us for plenary and workshop sessions. The plenary and workshop sessions will focus on working alternative and positive models of organizing for global economic justice.

On Sunday, September 26, the conference will culminate in a public demonstration at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund. The most powerful decision-makers of the global economy meet then for the IMF's Interim Committee Meeting. We will share with them - loudly! - our commitment and determination -renewed and strengthened in the course of No Debt, No Sweat: Organizing for Global Justice - for a just and equitable global economy.

"In the whole vast fun-house of history's jokes and tricks, there can be few greater ironies than the spectacle of women embracing and furthering the systems which would all too soon attack their autonomy, crush their individuality, and undermine the very reason for their existence."

- Rosalind Miles, The Women's History of the World

[There is a] growing assertion that globalization and technological change make inevitable low wages and inequalities....The counter argument that has not gained much popular support is that inequalities result from human agency; they are not the inevitable consequence of 'progress.'
