PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES CARL SPIELVOGEL AS

U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC

The President today announced his intent to nominate Carl Spielvogel to be U.S. Ambassador to the Slovak Republic.

Mr. Carl Spielvogel, of New York, New York, is one of the nation's leading international business executives. He created and served as the chief executive officer of two major multi-national marketing and advertising companies, Backer & Spielvogel, Inc. and Sacker Spielvogel Bates, Worldwide, Inc. Mr. Spielvogel was also vice-chairman of the Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. and CEO of the United Auto Group, Inc. In addition to his business endeavors, Mr. Spielvogel is also deeply involved in cultural affairs and is a board member of many cultural organizations, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York. He also serves as a trustee of Mt. Sinai Hospital and Eureka Communities, an inner-city charity.

Mr. Spielvogel was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a B.B.A. from Baruch College of the City University of New York.
