Nobel Laureate Robert Solow Will Highlight March 8 News Conference.

WASHINGTON, DC. Over 100 of the nationís leading economists, united under the banner of Economists for Increased National Savings, will announce their support for President Bill Clintonís FYí00 budget priority to save the surpluses, in a joint statement to be released on March 8, 1999. The signers endorse the Administrationís plan to direct the bulk of the $4.4 trillion of net budget surpluses away from additional spending or tax cuts, and toward a productive, long-term strategy of saving today for a mor e prosperous America tomorrow.

According to the statement, the Presidentís proposed policy will ìfree up trillions in the hands of private investors who will be able to lend the money to businesses for investment.î ìSaving and investing is the only real way,î they urge, ìto ease the burden on future workers.î Co-signers include: Nobel Laureates Kenneth Arrow, Lawrence Klein, Paul Samuelson, Franco Modigliani, Robert Solow, and James Tobin, as well as other leaders with distinguished careers in economics, finance, academia, public pol icy, and government service.
