Sanders has a chance against Jeffords

WCAX-TV 3/1/99

(WCAX) If Vermont Congressman Bernie Sanders decides to challenge Senator James Jeffords next year, he'll have a good chance of winning.

That's the finding of a new Channel 3 News poll released Monday.

The poll of 477 Vermonters asked, "If the vote for U-S Senator were held today--and the candidates were Jeffords and Sanders--who would you vote for?"

Jeffords was picked by 42% of the respondents, Sanders by 37%. The five-point difference matches the poll's margin of error. This is what pollsters refer to as a statistical dead heat. Roughly 20% were undecided.

The poll also showed Senator Jeffords votes against removing President Clinton from office does not appear to be a major issue one way or the other with Vermont voters.

At this point in time, Congressman Sanders is only THINKING about running for the Senate next year.
