Jacques Ellul's Technological Bluff reads like a better known Manifesto on
Industrial Society. As for Doug's apologia for innovation, it is almost
determined entirely by the needs of the system, e.g., class biased
effective demand (even the Schumpeterian James Galbraith mentioned this in
his PKT seminar), employers need for techs of control (see Noble's
discussion of numerically controlled mfg), the need to sustain private
property (Lewontin's killer seeds), and of course technological
rationalisations to eliminate labor given the need to cut costs in a global
slump. The greatest innovative force of production would be proletarian
revolution itself.
