Well, it's a mixed bag all right. On the one hand, you can point to the toll taken by time-honored practices like human sacrifice, female circumcision, suttee, etc. On the other, you can have reservations about the beneficent impact of tradition busters like Cortés, Leopold II and Cecil Rhodes.
