I think it's a psychological coping strategy for liberals and social democrats. Confronted with the violence of capitalism, they cling to a worser evil as their defense. Since there's no candidate for worser evil around now, and since the United States has no plausible military or imperial rival in the world, they've got to delve deep into the past for comfort.
