'By the mid-60s Mostel would be in greater demand than any star on Broadway; in 1968 the *Times* critic estimated him as possibly "America's greatest actor." "Old friends," who for years had been out when he phoned, lined up to congratulate him after the first night of *A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum*, when it was clear that he had emerged from the blacklist era to new success and prestige.
