hi angela,

doug has a piece about "globalization" so-called that he presented when he was down here for a conference. you might ask him about that. the rhetorical occasion for his essay is one by roger burbach et.al. in the spring issue of science and society--it claims that globalization really has happened--it's an epochal shift etc. it's worth reading, at least to see the way that numbers can be used and misused (on this score, you might also see a piece by paul krugman, "competitiveness: a dangerous obsession," which is in _pop internationalism_.) you also might want to check out hirst and thompson's _globalization in question_ (polity), as well as paul doremus, william keller, louis pauly and simon reich's book, _the myth of the global corporation_ (princeton). the latter has lots of numbersy stuff in it, though dating only to 94-95. doug's piece, as i recall it, also makes some hay about the way that numbers are used to support the globalization thesis.

is this what you're looking for?

christian
