Venezuelan president says no
to US warplane overflights
----------------------------
CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said in an interview published Sunday that he would not allow "US military flights" through Venezuelan airspace.
"We cannot accept that any foreign military plane fly over our territory without our permission and we will not permit it," he said.
The president told the daily "El Universal" that he nevertheless respects Washington's decision to set up bases in nearby Curacao.
Chavez said he would take no action on the Curacao installations "because we respect people's' right to self-determination and national sovereignty," pointing out that the bases result from a treaty between the Netherlands and the United States.
"They can set up bases wherever they decide according to the treaties they sign with other nations," he added.
"But even as we respect that and cannot denounce or criticize it, we hope that the US government will understand and respect our position. I sure they will understand and respect it," Chavez told the daily.
