well it's unfortunate that anyone was offended in the sense that you thought i was stereotyping out of ignorance or meanspiritedness. that was a joke, though with a point. most of it was actually based on my son's little unscientific survey on a few lists because he and a friend did research on australia. (lamingtons, btw, mentioned in almost every single response). the point if it escaped anyone, though, was that is a wee bit of defining ourselves against others that goes on, to wit: "Australians tend to think most yanks are weird on this, it makes us uncomfortable..."
