The phrase that caught my attention was: "a century scarred by the malign search for self-sufficiency." This seems to be FT's label for third-world communism (i.e., Stalinism). As such, it is highly suggestive -- both as

the basis for a possible defense not only of past but of future Stalinism in the imperialized world -- and as the basis for mocking the fears of anti-stalinists in the imperialist world. Lots of things can happen "here" -- but not that. China's "development" of the last two decades, on the other hand, is inconceivable except on the foundations of the communist ("stalinist") revolution that preceded it.

Several cheers at least for the "malign search for self-sufficiency."
