Extrapolating from a specific Texas case study, Goodwyn's overstates the positive (for lack of a better word) features of late 19th century populism. Check out Robert McMath's _American Populism: A Social History_ for a 'balanced' view that treats the movement as complex and contradictory (includes a useful bibliographic essay). Michael Hoover
