For those interested, there is a rather persuasive critique of
evolutionary psychology by Lewontin and Levins in the latest Capitalism,
Nature and Socialism. Also that rather witty book review by Lewontin of
the Dark Side of Man that I cited. In the latest issue of Biology and
Philosophy Elisabeth Lloyd subjects Cosmides and Tooby to critique. Angier
has a chapter criticism too, right?
Since I don't have a scanner or the articles in front of me, won't give a
summary now.
Pinker turns to something called genetic learning theory to show how
language evolved as an adaptation. Maynard Smith seems to accept the
argument as does Douglas Dennett. Somone who has actually studied
linguistics tell me that Pinker is a faker. But I don't know the basis for
his criticism.
Yours, Rakesh
