Reuters reports police and at least one delegate -- from Colombia -- claiming that demonstrators were "assaulting" delegates. The assault on the Colombian, according to him or her, is that some people pounded on his car.
Interestingly, the Reuters subhead in the story reads:

Basically the folks are doing what about 40,000 (?) of us did on May Day in Washington, 1971. But nobody shot at us; just tear gas (not that much either).
