STUDENTS TAKE ON DRUG WAR

Another sign of growing activism on campus: a new student group to fight the evils of the war on the drugs holds its first national conference in Washington November 5-6. Says Students for a Sensible Drug Policy, "Today's college students, many of whom grew up in the 80's and 90's and were the very children this war was supposed to protect, have seen firsthand the failure of punitive approaches to discourage youth drug use .... The War on Drugs and the unregulated market it has created pose a threat to our generation and society as a whole. As this war expands and further erodes our civil liberties, incarcerates our peers and even engulfs the higher education system, it is time for students to raise their voices .... For a generation, expanding prison populations, shrinking Constitutional protections, the shipment of arms to Latin American militaries and escalating corruption have been rationalized as "sending a message to our children." We, the college students of today, were those children! It is up to us to make our voices heard." The conference is being sponsored in part by the Drug Reform Coordination Network.
