Yeah, too bad Steely Dan is already part of the Right.

Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, a guitar legend from his days with the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, is weighing a race against Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.). The GOP is looking for "nontraditional" candidates to energize some races. The ponytailed Baxter, an ardent proponent of missile defenses, fits the bill.

And he's rich enough to foot the bill.

"He's going to throw his beret in the ring," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), a close friend of the rocker. If he runs, Baxter's favorite headgear is likely to become the most famous beret since Monica Lewinsky's.

Baxter has been an adviser to Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) on ballistic missile defense. There was a bit of a stink raised three years ago after Baxter claimed on his resume to have counseled NASA and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which he had not done--at least not in any formal way.

Bono was a Republican, too. Who knew that the longhairs in their hip-huggers and vests would wind up in the party of Reagan and Nixon?
