As far as I know, this is a complete defamation. Steely Dan was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They were famous for being a studio band that almost never toured -- it was just these two guys, plus a bunch of studio musicians that they had come in and lay down tracks, and then they mixed the results - kind of like They Might Be Giants. The musicians often didn't hear any of the other music or the vocals. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was a hired hand, and a skilled one, but he wasn't hired for his ideas, which seem to chime with his redneck personna.
I don't know about Donald Fagen, but I'm almost certain that Walter Becker is still quite the left-leaning cynic. BTW, does everyone know they named their band after the milk-squirting dildo in Naked Lunch?
