Friends,

Can anyone direct me to a source giving the extent of the use of part-time and graduate student faculty in colleges and universities as well as the ratio of nontenure to tenure stream full-time faculty? Thanks.

Michael Yates ----------------------------------------------------- This not an answer but suggests that tabulation is occurring>>>>>

[H-Net does not normally permit the distribution of surveys through its announcement system. The following survey is being distributed via H-Announce, however, because its subject is of central concern to the historical profession, and the organization sponsoring it plays a major role in the collection and publication of data concerning the working conditions among academic historians. The survey was not commissioned by H-Net, and the American Historical Association is responsible for the collection of data, its analysis, and the dissemination and use of results. Responses should be sent to Robert Townsend, Manager, American Historical Association at rtownsend at theaha.org or by snail mail at 400 A St., SE, Washington D.C. 20003, and not to H-Net.]

From: "Robert B. Townsend" <rtownsend at theaha.org> Subject: PART-TIME AND ADJUNCTS SURVEY

The American Historical Association is gathering information about the number of historians teaching in a temporary and/or part-time capacity as well as the working conditions of those who occupy such positions. The results of this survey will enable the AHA to more effectively carry out its responsibilities to monitor the quality of history education and to oversee the health of the historical profession. Towards this end, the AHA wishes to circulate this brief questionnaire as widely as possible, utilizing the e-mail lists maintained by H-NET. The very first, unnumbered question, is directed at those currently in full-time employment, occupying tenured or tenure-track lines. Answering this question will help us ascertain the role part-time and/or temporary employment plays in the development of academic careers. The rest of the questions are directed towards those currently working in part-time and/or temporary situations.

Please return the survey to Robert Townsend, Manager, American Historical Association at rtownsend at theaha.org or by snail mail at 400 A St., SE, Washington D.C. 20003.

For those of you who maintain more than one list membership we ask that you reply only once, and we apologize for the duplication of postings. Please keep in mind that e-mail is not a totally secure mode of communication, but the AHA will maintain the confidentiality of the information it receives.
