There was an interesting front-page article in the Wall Street Journal the other day saying that Blair & Co. are intent on privatizing the London Underground. By contrast, the New York City subway system *started out* as three privately owned subway lines -- the IRT, BMT and IND -- with different technical specs, which is why the same rolling stock can't be used throughout the system. These lines were taken over by the local government because they proved unprofitable and, as memory serves, unsafe.
