I thought it would be more like someone from NY moving to rural America. Bourgeoise sophisticate in the land of the rubes sort of thing. Is this not how the East/West split is seen in Germany? Using the stereotype of workers as rude redneck thugs has been a useful as a tool for instilling discipline among middle/upper-middle class people in the US, and I'd be surpised if you don't see the same thing elsewhere.
