A FRESH VOICE ONLINE AND IN THE NEW YORK TIMES ~ New Opinion Journal Launched ~

TomPaine.com

Washington, D.C. - There's a new voice on the Internet and on the op-ed page of the New York Times. TomPaine.com debuts Tuesday, September 7 with the first of its weekly op-ed page advertisements in the Times. Find it online at www.TomPaine.com.

"The op-ed page of the New York Times is the front yard of the government and media establishment," says John Moyers, the publisher. "Each week we're going to bang a lawn sign into that well-manicured turf, giving fresh voices a chance to join the national conversation. Anyone interested in news and current events - and journalists, especially - will find TomPaine.com a source of provocative opinion and analysis."

TomPaine.com draws its inspiration from the patriot Thomas Paine, author of "Common Sense" and "The Rights of Man." Paine was a man of humble origins and modest education, but he became a writer of extraordinary skill and passion. He used his talent to advance the cause of liberty and democracy against distant and unaccountable rulers.

TomPaine.com will enrich debate on controversial issues by featuring ideas, opinions, and analyses often overlooked by other media. The journal will cover a range of issues, but it has particular interest in campaign financing, the environment, media criticism, and in the perspective historians bring to public affairs.

Readers will find a variety of material on the site, including:

· Op-Ad Features: A package of stories adding depth and context to the issues presented in the "op ads," along with links to the authors and organizations featured. · History: Articles by some of the nation's preeminent historians adding their timely and studied opinions to current events. · Take on the News: Watching the watchdogs, directing kudos and criticism at the news media. · Opinion: A selection of opinions from writers with a different point of view. · Bulletin Boards: Where readers have a chance to watchdog TomPaine.com and the groups it features.

Readers may subscribe to a weekly synopsis of the web site's new articles.

TomPaine.com is a project of the non-profit Florence Fund. Initial funding has been provided by the Florence and John Schumann Foundation.
