Hello,  
I just thought of an additional author no one has mentioned so far -- Anthony 
Blunt.
I have only looked briefly at one of  his books, and that was quite some time 
ago, but anyone who was an ace talent-spotter for the Soviet intelligence 
service as well as Keeper of the Queen's Pictures surely had some interesting 
points of view.
