There is also TJ Clarke's _Image of the People: Gustav Courbet and the 1848 Revolution_. Originally published in 1973, it's been out of print for a long time, but I see that just this year he's come out with a freshly revised version. I also see that he's just published another book on sort of the same subject, _The Absolute Bourgeois: Artists and Politics in France, 1848-1851_.
