* US backs away from sending combat troops to Timor*
President Bill Clinton has announced the United States will providing 200 personnel to the East Timor military mission, with half of them to be sent to the province itself.
Indonesia's military chief has reportedly said his troops will start to leave the territory once the security force arrives.
