Littleton: it's Adorno's fault

This discussion seems to reflect an almost random variation in taste from decade to decade. Forty years ago it was almost impossible to find much of Vivaldi on tape -- and in New York musicians from various groups got together on their own to play Vivaldi at 4:30 a.m. There wasn't enough demand for his music to play it at regular concerts. And in the '30s I believe either Pound or Wyndham Lewis remarked something like, "800 mss. of Vivaldi not edited and they dare to speak of western civilization." If Pound had not arranged for the microfilming

of a huge cache of Vivaldi mss. in Dresden they would all have gone up when that city was firebombed.

Lawes and Jenkjins guard thy rest

Dolmetsch ever be thy guest.

(Canto 81)

George Thompson (the British Stalinist/Maoist greek scholar) compared Beethoven and Aeschylus as artists of democracy (preferring Beethoven).
