</b></font>
<p>PITTSBURGH (March 8, 1999)– Striking workers from Reactive Metals Inc. (RMI) in
Niles, Ohio, will demonstrate outside the USX headquarters in downtown Pittsburgh on
Wednesday morning, calling on the steel company to settle a five month strike at the plant
where USX controls seven out of 10 board seats.</p>
<p>Hundreds of RMI Steelworkers and supporters will rally Wednesday, March 10, at 10 a.m.
on the sidewalk outside the USX building at 600 Grant Street.</p>
<p>Five hundred and thirteen Steelworkers at the RMI titanium plant in Niles, Ohio, have
been on strike since Oct. 1, 1998. </p>
<p>USWA District 1 Director Dave McCall said the company forced the strike when workers
asked for long-awaited pension increases and other modest improvements. He said when the
company experienced hard times in the 1980s and 90s, hourly employees at the plant worked
with management to avoid bankruptcy.</p>
<p>Now the Steelworkers contend that RMI is the most profitable titanium company in the
country, with an 86% increase in sales and a 1200% increase in profits since 1995. </p>
<p>McCall said, "Executive compensation for management at RMI has tripled over the
past three years. Yet RMI is trying to throw union members out of work just for asking for
their share of the new profits."</p>
<p>USWA Local 2155 President Bob Walsh said, "Workers at RMI have been loyal to the
company through the years. We’ve helped it survive. Now that RMI is again making a
sizable profit, workers should not get the short end of the stick."</p>
<p>The Steelworkers say RMI management forced the current strike on its long-time workers,
and then brought in replacement workers to take their jobs. They said the small eastern
Ohio town of Niles has now been turned into a tense battleground because of corporate
greed.</p>
<p>Union workers said that USX owns 27% of the stock at RMI, and<b> </b>controls 7 of 10
board seats as well</p>
<p>Local 2155 President Walsh said, "RMI management would not have forced this strike
and brought in scabs without the approval of USX and its management."</p>
