a new trade dispute with India, taking it to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The US is griping about India imposing “unfair” restrictions on American automakers keen on setting up operations in India. US Trade Representative (USTR) Charlene Barshefsky, announced yesterday that Washington’s grouse against India’s barriers on investment in the auto industry was one of the seven new cases the US intended to bring before the WTO. The Office of the USTR also released a report identifying unfair foreign practices under its trade law “Super 301”, along with an executive order signed by President Bill Clinton, explaining US trade expansion priorities in the WTO. In line with Super 301 objectives, the USTR also announced that it had initiated dispute-settlement cases in the WTO concerning French subsidies to Airbus for avionics equipment, India’s investment policy on automobiles and South Korean barriers to imports and distribution of beef. The report said the US will request for WTO consultations with India on its new auto policy, governing investment in the automobile industry. The policy, which came into effect last year, expects all new and existing firms wishing to operate auto manufacturing investments in India to sign a standardised agreement with the Indian government. The agreement pertains to local content and foreign exchange balancing requirements.
