First and foremost, capitalism is a scam. That's my ignorant-workie's impression, anyway, from, among other things, watching the 80s S&L fun, and also from the toe-curling delight of tracking NASDAQ and the Dow every fifteen minutes last Friday.

Those futile Iridium launches generated the same kind of profits for the aerospace industry as the never-used Atlas and Titan ICBMs did, as the "Star Wars" strategic-defense missiles will. Somebody has got to be pretty happy about all the money that got spent.
