J'ism school is institutionalized stupidity. I was on a panel at the Columbia J-school years ago, along with Katha Pollitt, on the "alternative press." The prof who organized the panel had distributed one of Katha's columns on the Baby M affair, an artificial insemination case whose details now escape me. It was political analysis of the sort that intelligent columnists like Katha do - but the students had no idea what to make of it. It wasn't "objective reporting." One complained there wasn't any poll data in it. And that's the cream of the J-school crop.
