The following resolution, endorsing the Labor Conference and March for Mumia, 12-13 May, and for "union action" by the AFL-CIO to save his life should execution be imminent, was passed by SF Bay Area Local 10 of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) om April 20th:

Resolution in Defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal

Whereas, the ILWU has been on record for ten years in defense of death row political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, and

Whereas, the case of this innocent black journalist framed-up for his political views is entering a critical phase presently before Federal District Judge Yohn who will decide whether Mumia will get a new trial, and

Whereas, just like in the defense of ILWU International President Harry Bridges against political persecutions, we place confidence in the power of the organized labor movement, not in the courts, to achieve justice, and

Whereas, the San Francisco Labor Council, the Alameda County Central Labor Council and the Labor Action Committee to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal have initiated the call for a Labor Conference on Mumia on May 12 and for organized labors participation on May 13 in San Francisco in the Western Regional Mass Mobilization to defend Mumia, and

Therefore be it resolved that the ILWU endorse this Conference and Mobilization and that the ILWU lead the march of labor union contingents from Justin Herman Plaza, the starting point of the march, behind the banner "An injury to one is an injury to all--Free Mumia Abu-Jamal!" as we did last year.

Be it finally resolved that if the governor of Pennsylvania proceeds to execute Mumia Abu-Jamal that the ILWU call on AFL-CIO President John Sweeney to coordinate union action nationwide to save the life of this courageous fighter for labor and the oppressed.

--passed by Local 10, International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), April 20, 2000.
