Doesn't this sort of tie into the Hayek thread? I've not read much of Hayek, but isn't one of his points that central planning can work miracles in the short term, but eventually becomes ossified and falls of it's own weight.
Also, (sort of on the subject of "the market": I'd be interested to hear what (if anything) people on the list think of the work of Jane Jacobs, particularly her analyse of markets and cities as "natural" systems...
