Whatever's JL's ideological proclivities, this is a total non-issue. The alleged flip-flop is away from privatization. JL's office issued the op-ed, but they claim it had been submitted to two newspapers some months ago. This should be easy enough to verify. You have to believe JL wrote the column in anticipation of being considered for VEEP. I guess anything's possible, but this is a bit of a stretch. At any rate, he's improved his position on SocSec.
