Marvin Harris wrote a very reasonable-seeming essay on paleolithic abortion and infanticide called "Murders in Eden" in _Cannibals and Kings: The Origins of Cultures_. He didn't believe people had much in the way of contraception back then, but he was persuaded that they knew a lot about abortifacients.
