Social psychologist Philip Zimbardo once commented that if one person is having delusions we call it mental disorder and lock that person up in an institution, but if a group of persons is having the same delusions we call it a point of view and protect it with constitutional amendments. Information technology moves that process to a different level - making money out of one's mental disorder.

Compulsive-obsessive disorder, whose behavioral manifestations include, inter alia, compulsive counting of everything such as trees along the road or one's steps, is becoming a market niche for electronic products. A recent ad from www.tigerdirect.com introduces "sportbrain - wireless personal technology for tracking health and fitness." In plain English, the "sportbrain" is a counter attached to a person's belt that counts that person's steps and transmits this information to a webpage where it is graphically displayd and compared to the number of steps from the previous days.

Sounds too crazy to be true? Visit www.tigerdirect.com and look for item #S775-1000 or S775-1002.
