Do you mean place where, according to V. O. Key, "comparatively mild"
attitudes on "race question" resulted in "relative unconcern about the
Negro" (_Southern Politics_, 1949)...Place where Key (and white writers
following his lead) maintained that racial demagoguery & systematic
exclusion of blacks from political participation was never as intense as
it was in other southern states...place that ostensibly experienced fewer
acts of white racist terrorism & exhibited weaker resistance to efforts
aimed at registering black to vote...place where "racial moderation" (so
story goes) stemmed from blacks comprising smaller % of population than
other southern states...
Or do you mean place where 44% of state population was black at turn-of-
20th century...place where Jim Crow was introduced at time when blacks
outnumbered whites in northern counties...place that was first to pass
"black codes" after Civil War codifying secondary & subjugated status of
African Americans...place that began excluding blacks from political
participation via poll taxes & multiple ballot laws before most other
southern states...place where Dem Party was among first to prohibit
African Americans from voting in primary elections...place where Klan
spread intimidation & violence through black communities...place where
lynchings were not unusual means of reinforcing white domination &
oppression...
Latter is same place that set up "vehicle equipment" & "driver licence"
stops near black voting precincts...told blacks waiting in line to vote
that there were no more ballots...required 2 forms of ID from blacks
and 1 from whites...disenfranchised larger % blacks of than whites (who
were themselves no doubt, working poor) via "incorrectly" listing them
as convicted felons...that had more "incomplete" voter rolls in
predominantly African American precincts than in white ones...that had
more black ballots thrown out than white ones...
And where none of above is related to fact that African American turnout
in FL was unprecedented...clearly, it's just you... Michael Hoover
