Concering the debate over Nader, ultra-leftism, and where one lies on the political spectrum, I have no problem with Nader voters who attended the Nation cruise, while I suspect anarchists and some leftists on this list do - either for voting for Nader or supporting The Nation or going on a Carribean cruise or a combination of the three. Some of the left needs to lighten up, whether it's prissy social democrats who worry about broken windows in Nice, or judgmental anarchists who see sell-out everywhere they look. Of course, what's happening in the Supreme Court today isn't the crisis, everyday "normality" is the ongoing crisis.
What's really pissing me off these days are Republicans (and some Democrats) from large states who argue that getting rid of the the electoral college and modernizing the election system would hurt small states. Boo hoo. These people are offensively servile, ass-kissing, boot-licking brown-nosing, syncophatic toadies to big money/capital/oligarchical power. And they're chickenshit for not coming out and saying that democracy/one- person-one-vote is a bad idea. And I would not be surprised if anti-urban racism plays a part. Okay, okay, I'll lighten up.
Is it me or did Katha Pollitt do a 180 in her Nation column, from don't blame Nader, blame Gore, to blame Nader and Gore? It's interesting that Republicans aren't blaming Buchanan. Maybe it's because he destroyed the Reform party, maybe because the Christian right-wing is not as strong as it once was? And maybe part of the reason Democrats are making much more of a stink is because they see the left wing as growing in power and verve.
