International Conference

Comparing Cultures Dimensions of Culture in a Comparative Perspective

Tilburg University, The Netherlands April 27, 2001

Hosted by IRIC, Institute for Research on Intercultural Cooperation, in collaboration with Globus, Institute for Globalization and Sustainable Development, and the Department of Social Sciences, all at Tilburg University, the Netherlands.

Keynote speakers are: Prof. Geert Hofstede, Tilburg University, Tilburg, The Netherlands. Prof. Ron Inglehart, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. Prof. Wolfgang Jagodzinski, Universität zu Köln, Cologne, Germany. Prof. Shalom Schwartz, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel. Prof. Harry C. Triandis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.

In two plenary sessions and a forum discussion, chaired by Prof. Pieter Drenth (Free University of Amsterdam, Chair of European Values Studies), the distinguished social scientists mentioned above, address one of the most intriguing questions in contemporary empirical cultural studies: what can we learn from the different sets of distinctive fundamental dimensions found in todays culture? The scholars mentioned have 'divided' the world of culture into competing sets of fundamental cultural dimensions and basic cultural axes. Comparing Cultures aims to explore common grounds from a cross-disciplinary perspective. The conference will be closed with the launch of the 2nd fully revised edition of Geert Hofstede’s best-selling book Culture’s Consequences. Prof. Pieter Drenth will present the first copy of this book to Prof. Geert Hofstede.

The following paper sessions are organized: 1. Globalization, substate cultural diversity, and national culture 2. Cultural change, generations, and national culture 3. Methodological issues in national culture and cross-cultural research

4. Management of intercultural cooperation and the culture of nations and organizations

Contributions to these sessions with a strong empirical perspective are very welcome. Excellent papers will be selected for publication. A special journal issue is anticipated.

December 31, 2000 is the deadline for submitting abstracts for paper presentations in the afternoon paper sessions or you may send a full copy of your paper before February 15, 2001.
