Dear Herr Professor Sawicky: Are you then saying that the US labor movement should only call for the use of trade sanctions if the ILO finds the violation of core labor standards egregrious and sustained enough to invoke article 33? Is Sweeney committing himself to this seemingly reasonable standard? If he is, then he should realize that this is so a extraordinary case that he should not count on trade sanctions as the means by which to ensure enforcement of core labor rights. It is not that the Burmese junta has simply violated core labor standards; it has allowed for the literal enslavement of a substantial minority of its population. This is what it has taken for the ILO to invoke article 33; it will not happen soon again...especially against a more powerful country. Or does Sweeney think he should be free to call for trade sanctions whenever it pleases him whether or not the ILO lends its imprimatur to the cause? I see that you did not comment on the information which you submitted to the list. This has made replying to you difficult as I have had to divine the thoughts of Herr Professor Sawicky--no easy task. I still find it incomprehensible that you would risk putting Bush into power for the sake of casting a symbolic vote in favor of someone as murky as Nader. Oh, yes, I forget that, positivistically speaking, Bush's pro multimillionaire tax cuts will do more for full employment than Gore's pay down the debt scheme. So why do you not admit that you wanted Bush to win on the basis of your positivist Keynesian science? Why fake being a Nader supporter? The only way a leftist like you could help to ensure a Bush victory (for which you obviously hungered) was to pretend to be for Nader and take as many infantile leftist business observers dupes down this path. I suppose that with your new haircut you will even be more successful in such endeavors. Happy holiday greetings, Jan
