THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Vice President ________________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release February 3, 2000
STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT
I'm very pleased with the Senate's decision today to once again reappoint Alan Greenspan as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.
This month marks the longest period of economic expansion our country has ever enjoyed and I think it's clear that Chairman Greenspan has played a key role in helping bring about this never-before-seen period of prosperity. He has helped modernize America's financial system; he has helped our nation effectively deal with the Asian financial crisis; and he deserves credit for being the first to recognize how the Information Age would positively impact our nation's economy.
And perhaps most importantly, Chairman Greenspan's wise stewardship has resulted in our economy not just lifting the select few, but in an economy that has benefited America's working families.
As I have said before, I think Alan Greenspan has done an excellent, terrific job and I am fully confident that his technical expertise, experience and vision will continue to help wisely steer our nation's monetary policy in the future.
