US eugenics worse than previously believed, study shows A new study has revealed the extent of forced sterilisation programmes carried out in the United States, and likened them to those of Nazi Germany. Researchers at Yale University say the eugenics movement in America was conducted for longer and on a larger scale than previously thought. They said that, despite assumptions that interest in selective breeding waned after the 1920s, evidence showed that it continued well into the 1960s. Forced sterilisation was made legal in 18 states, in the belief it could rid society of mental illness and crime.
